A visit with Local Author, Jessica Flemming

Jessica Fleming (J.H. Fleming) is a local author of many short stories that have been published in various anthologies, the latest being her own works titled Lifting the Veil. Tales of Discovery and Magic. Lifting the Veil contains five original short stories of fantasy and magic written by Fleming. She has a novel in the works to be published later this year.

Fleming was born in Fayetteville and attended the University of Central Arkansas where she earned a bachelor degr

ee in Creative Writing. She presently lives, works and writes in Fort Smith.

As part of her creative writing major, Fleming took a class on publication at the University of Central Arkansas. The class required the students to submit stories for publication, so she submitted her stories to as many publishers as possible. Sometime after she graduated, a publication in England told her that they wanted to publish her story. She said, “I didn’t remember submitting to them, but that was okay.”

Fleming believes that publishing the first time made publishing future works somewhat easier because she could refer perspective publishers to her resume of publications and that caused them to pay a little more attention to her work than they might not have otherwise. “But publication takes work and patience,” Fleming said.

Fleming has a novel in the works that will be published later this year. She said that writing a novel is different than writing short stories in the fact that the writing pace is different. “If all of the action happens in 50 pages, but the novel needs to be 300 pages long, then you’re in trouble,” Fleming stated.

Fleming said that she hosts as many book signings as she possibly can to promote her work. Fleming has hosted three signings in Little Rock and one at the Fort Smith Anime Convention, and is always looking for places that will allow her to host book signings.
