Power Struggles: The Quest For Plugs

These days, many of a college student's vices are devices. Phones, tablets or laptops have become our ever-hungry fixations for entertainment, social contact, and even the occasional bit of schoolwork. These electronic life-sinks keep us on short attention spans and even shorter leashes as every day has that frantic moment at least once.

You know the one.

That moment when all your power bars are inching close to the red and you're minutes away from digital isolation from the rest of the world. That frenzied hunt for that precious white rectangle with the little black holes that holds the difference between cat videos on YouTube or actually having to acknowledge the people around you.

You sniff around the few tables in the food court near that wellspring of electric lifes-blood like Christmas shoppers hunting for that closest parking spot. Finding these outlets occupied, you mentally hiss your frustrations at these lucky few and prowl out for other, trickier, options. Do you try to claim a study room? Do you risk the occasional distracting blast of cold or hot air from opening doors near the fireplace? The library could keep you going, but at the expense of your just bought mocha latte.

We live in a world where the need to keep our toys and tools running just can't be supported by a school struggling to keep up. A few less outlets and we'd degrade to some Darwin-esque thunderdome at every outlet. Two plugs enter, one hand leaves.

But a few more?

Who knows what changes that dreamworld could bring? Holding hands and singing as we check our texts, we could bring world peace as we play League Of Legends. Think of the cures for cancer and the common cold that could be discovered through the sheer power of overhead power strips.

At least, after we check our Tumblrs.
